Can dogs swim in an inground pool with a liner or would their nails tear it?
does anyone know if there are different types of liners that would be more sturdy? It’s hard enough trying to find a house to buy that has a pool, having to find one that’s concrete or fiberglass is even harder.
16th answer – Yes I mean inground pool – they come in 3 types – fiberglass, liner, and cement. Unfortunately the ones with a liner are most common around here.

My daughter’s 3 dogs swim with her all the time in our pool but she never swims alone and always catches them before they get to the edge. Yes, their nails can ruin the liner especially if they try to get out in deeper water. She nudges her dogs to the built in stairs, that works well too. They do make thicker liners, sort of the same principal as trash bags with different ml thicknesses, the higher the ml the thicker and stronger the liner. Of course, the more ml’s the more $$.
We have two dogs they both swim in our inground pool, that has a liner. We taught them to get in and out at the stairs. The stairs go down into the water. Never had a problem. Get in the pool guide them in and let them swim a bit and guide them back to the steps. The only time they might tear the liner is if they fall in on the side and panic to get back out. We test that out. One of us pushed them in from the side, the other called them to the steps. They didnt like being pushed in, but they came to the steps.
my sister would let her dog’s swim in her pool and they did not rip the liner. when we got older she bought a walk in staircase that was removable which of course would make it easier for the dogs to get out also. also chances are you will be there to assist them out anyways.
Our dogs swim in our pool all the time. We have a very large above ground pool with a deck around it. NEVER let your pet near the water unless you are in the pool with them.
We have had ours a few years now and never once have they snagged the liner. It is a thick liner as well. We have a large air mattress in the pool when we are in there, the dogs like to la on that and dry off, they have never popped that either.
Usually when my dogs head for the edge I turn them in another directions..
It should be fine to let your dog/s swim with you if you take precautions;-)
Only if you are at the edge to catch them BEFORE they reach the liner. Their nails will tear the liner. Some home insurance will cover this damage but then your insurance rates go up.

Are you sure you don’t mean above ground pool? In ground is usually cement. We have a pool with a vinyl liner and our dogs swim sometimes. Our Sheltie , we usually put in a chair [Floating] Because he has arthritis, our Westie and Silky we just watch for when they want to get out or else they could rip the liner.So just help them in and out and watch them and stay with them just like you would a small child.
dogs ain’t good swimmers, but I suppose that they could swim. Their nail ain’t gonna tear it. ( if y’all keep um short. )
I would speak to a pool seller, they may have different materials for different liners. Also just a tip make sure you rinse your dog off if he does swim in a pool the chlorine may iritate his skin.

Well I’ld say its safe to say tour taking a 50/50 chance actually. We had an inground pool wit liner and our Dog’s always swam with us with NO problem BUT a friend of mine let her Dog get in her’s and he did snag the lining although it was easily fixed. Keep the nails trimmed and filed and it will probably lessen the chance.
there is no prob in it but just fun .just clip his nails urself carefully with a clipper or go to a groomer for help.

I have an above ground pool and my dog swims in it all the time. We just dont let her go towards the liner. So it should be okay.
