I have an above ground pool when I put the winter cover on, I live in Utah am I supposed to drain the pool?
It snows and gets quite cold here so I don’t know the answer please respond to my email directly cindeblaw@yahoo.com. Thanks.

Balance your water chemistry a week before closing time. Drain the water level to just below the pool return. No further. Add your winterizing chemical kit to the water, remove drain plugs from your filtration system components, blow out any water in lines, plug those lines off with winterizing plugs (T taped), toss something squishable (empty chem bottles work or partially inflated inner tube) into the skimmer and cover the pool. Just before ice in, drain off about 1/2 of the water tha may have accumulated on the cover surface.
As this is an above ground pool, you have the option of bringing the pump and filter inside for the winter. I suggest you at the very least, bring the pump in. Those AG pumps have a nasty tendency to seize over the winter months if left outside. The filter, if it was drained properly and pressure gauges removed is fine left outside.
I would drain it.
You should drain the poo some. Ususally this is about 4 inches below the filter skimmer port. Keep in mind that draining it to much will allow the pool to collapse with the weight of the snow from the outside..Do not forget to put your winter chemicals in, it makes it so much easier to get ready in the summer. Any more Questiions I would see the local pool guy. Hope this helped.
You do have to drain it at least below the skimmer. That is because otherwise when it freezes – it will expand & burst the skimmer.
Also, you will need to drain the filter, disconnect the hose to the filter and remove the plug from the filter.
Now … what I do – is I drain mine to leave about a foot of water in it BUT then I do not cover it.
I do remove the plug and drain the filter and disconnect the hose.
Each year I simply have the pool people finish draining the water, clean the pool & refill it. To me – it’s just as cost effective to do this as it is to top up all the chemicals in the fall.
Hope this helps.
