Will you allow the Utility company to control your home?
"Big Brother to control thermostats in homes?
Proposed mandate would give utility companies unlimited remote access to regulate temperatures"
Add thermostats to the list of private property the government would like to regulate as the state of California looks to require that residents install remotely monitored temperature controls in their homes next year.
The government is seeking to limit rolling blackouts and free up electric and natural gas resources by mandating that every new heating and cooling system include a "non-removable" FM receiver. The thermostat is also capable of controlling other appliances in the house, such as electric water heaters, refrigerators, pool pumps, computers and lights in response to signals from utility companies. If contractors and residents refuse to comply with the mandate, their building permits will be denied.

anthropos..this wouldn’t be necessary if environmentalists hadn’t shut down reactor building either…
No, I don’t think anyone will stand for that.
Not in my house, this has to be some super far left wing nutcase dream.
no
yeah, and you wonder why it’s called the left coast.this is the liberal hoard that say they are for peoples rights.lol better wake up because they think they know whats best for you and how you have to live.all in the name of liberalism.
This is nothing new. It is an option you may choose with many power companies across the company. You usually get a free thermostat and a cheaper rate for your power.
I don’t agree that it should be mandatory however.
If California moves ahead with this, I want to see them administer it. How much do you think THAT will cost?
I know that, from an operational standpoint, the utility companies will have "control" over the thermostats but the real control will be politics. Once the capability is there, do you think that environmentalists will be happy unless they restrict the temperatures that the houses are set to in order to reduce the energy consumption (e.g. no setting below 76 during the summer and no setting above 65 in the winter). This will immediately become subject to temperature politics.
I really expect this to happen, especially because the affluent areas populated by the environmentalists are quite temperate and, as a result, any such control would have little impact on them personally.
Perhaps these measures would not be necessary, had voluntary conservation worked. Irresponsibility should be checked by responsibility.
Should be simple to hack if they do. Just put an icepack on top of the thing if you want it to be warmer in the house or heat up a wet towel in the microwave and put it on top of it if you want the house cooler.
People don’t think about these things (especially in CA) before they spend billions on a worthless government program.
